Department of Human Services Wraps Up Older American Month
The Department of Human Services have spent the month of May celebrating senior citizens throughout the territory, and now it is wrapping with more activities and events. Tuesday, May 24, 2016 is Citizenship Day, and seniors will assume the role of senators in the 31st Legislature. Seniors from St. Croix and St. Thomas will meet and debate a bill to “prohibit any requirement that durable Power of Attorney which has no stated time of termination be renewed in order to be effective and for other purposes”.
The Herbert Grigg Home for the Aged will host an Open House the senior citizens. A full day of activities is being planned to include music, dancing, and food and drinks. The following day is movie day and the seniors will spend time at Sunny Isle Movie Theatre enjoying fun and laughter amongst themselves. On Thursday, May 27th, the seniors on St. Croix will join Senator Positive Nelson for brunch at 10:00a.m. Seniors on St. Thomas will attend the Senior Ball at Victor’s Hideout beginning at 6p.m. The month of activities culminates on May 31st with the Senior Ball on St. Croix at Divi Carina Bay Resort at 6:00p.m.
Week Three: May 2016
DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES CEELBRATES OLDER AMERICAN/SENIOR CITIZEN’S MONTH
The week opens with church service on St. John at the Nazareth Lutheran church from 10am until 12noon. On Sunday May 15, 2016. On Wednesday, May 18th, Government House will host the senior at the “Blaze A trail” Awards ceremony and cocktail reception. The “Blaze a Trail” ceremony is in recognition of those older individuals who have made contributions to the community in one form or the other. This event begins from 6pm to 9pm.
The St. Thomas Health Expo will take place on Thursday, May 19th at the Tutu Park Mall at 11am.. There will be representatives from the medical field to provide screening for various health afflictions that affect the elderly. These screenings include diabetes, high blood pressure, vision, and other ailments. There will also be representatives from the Department of Human Services who service the needs of the aged. Seniors are encouraged to come out and participate.
The week of activities concludes with a “Beach Day” on St. Croix at the Frederiksted Pool. The activities start at 10:00am and ends at 2:00 pm.
Week Two: May 8-14, 2016
OLDER AMERICAN/SENIOR CITIZEN’S MONTH IS BEING CELEBRATED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES
In celebration of Older American/ Senior Citizen’s Month, the Department of Human Services continues to inform the community of its scheduled events and activities. On May 11, 2016, Rotary West will host our seniors for Bingo Day on St. Croix from 10:a.m. until 2:00p.m.
On May 13, 2013 seniors on St. Thomas will enjoy the day at Magens Bay Beach beginning at 10:00a.m. On St. Croix there will be a Health Expo at the David Canegata Multipurpose Center. The Health Expo will focus on screening services for senior citizens. These screening services include cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure, vision, podiatry and other medical ailments affecting the elderly. Also participating will be AARP, Department of Health, Continuum Care, American Cancer Society, Medicare, and other programs and services administered by the department.
Week One: May 1-7, 2016
Older AMERICAN/SENIOR CITIZEN’S MONTH IS BEING CELEBRATED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES
As the Department of Human Services celebrates Older American Month aka Senior Citizen’s Month, it’s important that we keep the community abreast of the activities that have been planned. This weekend begins with a parade on both islands. The parade on St. Thomas takes place on Friday, May 6, 2016 and commences at 10:00a.m. It will start at Lionel Roberts Stadium and ends at Emancipation Garden.
On Saturday, May 7, 2016, the parade on St Croix will also begin at 10:00a.m. at the Market Square (Times Square) on to Fort Christianvern. There will be a number of entries to include the STX Majorettes; floats to include Herbert Grigg Home and Gentlemen of Jones; AARP; schools to include Central High School Marching Band, Pearl B. Larsen School and the Ebenezer Steel Orchestra; head Start Children, Safari for Senior; lots of music to include local DJ’s and Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights will be keeping the beat of the parade alive!
The Department of Human Services extends Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers on Sunday, May 8, 2016.
